What is a Personal Support Worker?
A Personal Support Worker (PSW) is a Canadian health worker that provides or assists with personal care for those that are not fully able to care for themselves. This includes frail elderly, chronically ill, individuals with physical disabilities, and individuals with mental disabilities, amongst others. Personal Support Worker assists with the tasks of daily living. Services are provided in long-term care facilities, residential and supportive housing, and community support agencies. Personal Support Worker must develop a broad range of abilities beyond dexterity skills. They must provide not only for the comfort, safety and well-being of their clients, but also demonstrate sensitivity and respect for those in their care. The attitude, abilities and approach of the worker are critical to the well-being and health of the people they support.
